MANILA, Philippines — Jeepney transport group Manibela began a three-day strike on Wednesday, Sept. 17, to denounce anomalies in the government’s flood control projects.
Traffic slowed near Philcoa on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City as rallyists assembled at dawn, with teams from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the police sent to contain the disruption.
Group leader Mar Valbuena said they expect at least 100,000 drivers to take part in the protest, which will last until Friday.
Parallel demonstrations were also held in some parts of the country, which Manibela described as part of a coordinated call for accountability.
Another transport alliance, Piston, will mount its own strike on Thursday, pressing the same demand for accountability in government spending amid flood control infrastructure anomalies
