The Heartbreaking Toll of Conflict on Filipino Seafarers
In a somber revelation, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Saturday that a third Filipino seafarer has tragically lost their life due to the ongoing conflict in the Black Sea. This heartbreaking news underscores the human cost of the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, and it has left families and communities in mourning.
A Devastating Update
During a news forum in Quezon City, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac shared the latest developments. “We are reporting that one more seafarer has died. So, now, three of our countrymen have lost their lives in the northern Black Sea attacks,” he said with a heavy heart. His words conveyed the weight of the tragedy affecting not only the sailors but their families back home in the Philippines.
The conflict has directly impacted 236 Filipinos across 17 vessels. Among them, three have unfortunately died, 15 have sustained injuries, and one remains missing. Thankfully, 217 others have been confirmed safe, but the shadow of fear and uncertainty looms large over those still in peril.
Reaching Out to Grieving Families
Cacdac took the time to visit the families of the deceased seafarers, sharing the government’s condolences and providing much-needed support. Such acts of compassion remind us all that behind every statistic is a heartbroken family, struggling with the loss of a loved one.
A Call for Action
With the situation continuing to evolve, Cacdac emphasized that repatriation efforts are underway. So far, 89 individuals from the affected group have returned home, and nine of the injured have also been brought back to the Philippines. Unfortunately, many Filipino seafarers still remain scattered across Ukraine, Romania, Greece, and Turkey.
The attacks have been relentless and heartbreaking. Just under two weeks ago, reports surfaced that 12 others were injured in drone strikes in the Black Sea, a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in these turbulent waters.
Protecting Our Seafarers
In light of this devastating situation, the DMW is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of Filipino mariners. “We have issued an advisory to manning agencies and ship owners,” Cacdac explained. This advisory emphasizes three critical points: the immediate repatriation of seafarers from the attacked ships, the relocation of those still in the northern Black Sea to safer areas, and a strong recommendation against sending vessels with Filipino crew members to that region as the conflict persists.
With assessments from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of National Defense (DND) confirming a full-scale international armed conflict in the area, the urgency of these measures cannot be overstated.
