Thailand Pauses Ceasefire Deal with Cambodia Amid Rising Tensions

BANGKOK — Thailand announced on Tuesday that it is halting the implementation of a ceasefire agreement with neighboring Cambodia, just weeks after the deal was signed in the presence of US President Donald Trump, Thai Defense Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit said.

The Thai government will also pause the return of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war currently held by the military.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, who clashed for five days in July. The situation worsened after a landmine explosion on Monday injured four Thai soldiers, prompting Bangkok to take a firm stand.

Officials have yet to announce the next steps, but the suspension signals a serious strain on relations between the two countries.

The ceasefire deal, which was meant to bring calm after months of conflict, now hangs in uncertainty — leaving the region on edge once again.
