Tanay, Rizal: Top Christmas Spots and Local Dishes to Try

Tanay, Rizal is calling holiday travelers with its cool-weather charm, festive sights, and flavors that capture the spirit of Christmas — all just a short drive from Metro Manila.

As reported by Oscar Oida on 24 Oras, one of the top destinations is the Tanay Parola, a scenic spot where visitors can snap photos against the backdrop of a serene lake and rolling mountains. The area has become a favorite for those seeking a peaceful, chill escape without leaving the city.

For a more reflective experience, Regina Rica in Tanay’s uplands draws pilgrims from near and far. The site features a 71-foot statue of Mama Mary, a tranquil walking trail, and a wishing well. During the Christmas season, the community decorates a tree with 1,000 dolls of hope, which visitors can adopt to support local projects.

Tinutulungan po natin ‘yung mga Matigsalug Tribe, and gumagawa din nito si Rowena, a patient undergoing dialysis. It’s one way we can help,” said Sister Ellen Tayo.

Families traveling with kids can enjoy the Tanay Park Playground, complete with various play areas for children while the adults relax. Food stalls around the park offer festive treats like puto bumbong, giving visitors a taste of traditional holiday snacks.

Food lovers can also explore Tanay’s local culinary delights. One standout is sinigang bundok, a sour soup made with smoked fish and fresh vegetables harvested from mountain backyards.

Tinawag po siyang sinigang bundok kasi ‘yung main ingredient niya po ay fish — smoked fish — at ‘yung mga sahog ay mula sa backyard nila sa bundok,” explained Mica Piguing, OIC of Tanay Tourism Office.

Another must-try dish is sinanglay, a large tilapia cooked in creamy coconut milk. “Sa Laguna de Bay or Manila Bay po nanggagaling ‘yung mga isda na ginagamit sa pagluluto,” Piguing added.

As night falls, visitors often make their way to the Tanay Municipal Hall, where Christmas lights and colorful decorations illuminate the festive spirit, creating a magical backdrop for photos and memories.

With its mix of cool weather, cultural sites, family-friendly attractions, and delicious local dishes, Tanay offers the perfect Christmas getaway — close enough to the city, yet far enough to feel truly festive.
