Tajikistan Sets New Dress Rules for Women—Here’s Why!

Tajikistan is set to release a new book in July that tells women what they should wear in different situations, such as at home, at events, or in public. The country’s leaders say they are protecting “traditional Tajik culture” and banning clothes that are not part of their heritage.

In recent years, the government has pushed back against Islamic influences, banning the hijab and long beards, saying they are linked to religious extremism. Instead, women are encouraged to wear long, colorful embroidered tunics and loose trousers, which have been part of Tajik culture for generations.

The new book will be free initially and will include pictures, historical context, and improved design compared to previous editions. Officials say the goal is to preserve national identity, but critics argue it’s another way to control women’s choices.

Since 1992, President Emomali Rahmon has led the country with strict policies, including laws that limit religious expression. This crackdown became stricter last year after Tajik citizens were linked to a terror attack in Moscow.

What do you think? Is this preserving culture or restricting freedom? 🤔
