Step up precautions against floods, landslides, LGUs urged

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged local government units (LGUs) over the weekend to heighten precautionary measures as Super Typhoon Nando and the enhanced southwest monsoon are expected to bring heavy rains that could trigger floods and landslides.

The DILG called on governors, mayors, and barangay leaders to act with urgency by carrying out preemptive evacuations in high-risk communities, monitor rivers and slopes, clear waterways of obstructions, and ensuring road safety in landslide-prone areas.

“With the combined effects of Nando and the recent rains from Tropical Depression Mirasol, some areas are now facing compounded hazards. We strongly urge LGUs to remain vigilant and proactive to protect lives and property,” the department said.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau has identified more than 2,700 villages, including over 930 in Metro Manila, as susceptible to flooding and landslides.

The DILG stressed that even barangay not included in the official risk list may still be affected, especially those near identified danger zones. Updated advisories will be issued as rainfall forecasts evolve.

“All local chief executives must ensure that preparedness actions are in place and that residents are fully informed of potential risks in their communities,” the agency added.
