Siargao ranks No. 1 on Lonely Planet’s list of best places to visit in Southeast Asia

Siargao bested six other destinations as it topped the Lonely Planet’s list of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia!

A July article by the global travel magazine ranked Siargao, also known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, first on its list to visit in the region. The dreamy destination was hailed for its surfing spots, warm community, local bars and cafes, as well as fun activities such as cave adventures.

“Siargao is a tropical paradise known for its quality surfing, which includes the Cloud 9 break, regarded as one of the best waves in the world,” said Lonely Planet. “Surfers can take a boat out to Rock Island or Daku, or ride the left reef break at Stimpy’s.”

Amed in Bali ranked second on the list, followed by Cao Bang, Vietnam; Khao Sok National Park, Thailand; Luang Prabang, Laos; Penang, Malaysia; and Gili Air, Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco welcomed Lonely Planet’s recognition of Siargao.

In a statement on Monday, Frasco described Siargao as a destination that “balances adventure and excitement with tranquility and sustainability.”

“The acknowledgment given to Siargao is a victory for the island and its peoples and a proud moment for the entire country,” she said. “This underscores the growing global appreciation for the Philippines’ diverse and breathtaking landscapes, the richness of our culture, and the warmth and love of our people.”

“This achievement motivates us to continue our efforts in promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the natural wonders of our beautiful archipelago.”

Siargao, located in Surigao del Norte province, is truly a surfer’s paradise and a favorite among the global surfing community. The island regularly hosts international and local surfing competitions where some of the best surfers of the world convene.

Last year, the island hosted the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup, which served as a qualifier to the World Surf League (WSL) Men’s and Women’s QS3000 International Surfing Cup.

Filipino surfer John Mark Tokong was hailed the champion anew of the 27th Siargao International Surfing Competition after reigning supreme in the 26th edition in 2022.
