Some senators are upset and confused about how a big decision was made without following the usual process. Here’s what happened, explained in a way even a 4th grader can understand:
A group of senators didn’t agree with the Senate’s decision to stop (or “archive”) the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. They believe it was done the wrong way, and too soon.
What does “archive” mean here?
It means putting the case away without acting on it anymore, like putting a homework folder in a drawer and not looking at it again.
Who is upset?
-
Senator Kiko Pangilinan
-
Senator Risa Hontiveros
-
Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III
-
Senator Bam Aquino
These senators voted NO to archiving the case. They said the impeachment case should stay in the Senate Impeachment Court, not be stopped just because the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional.
What’s the issue?
Senator Pangilinan said only the Senate impeachment court should decide what happens to impeachment cases. He was surprised and bothered that the Supreme Court stepped in and stopped the case.
He also said it’s better to wait for the Supreme Court to finish everything first, especially since the House of Representatives already asked for a second look (a motion for reconsideration).
Senator Sotto asked a big question:
“How can the Senate archive something that is not even with them? It’s already in the impeachment court!”
He tried to stop the vote, but his motion didn’t win. Afterward, he simply said, “May God have mercy with your decision.”
Senator Hontiveros reminded everyone:
The Supreme Court’s decision may be in effect, but it’s not yet final. So she believes the Senate acted too soon. She said this move basically killed the impeachment case—and that decision came from the Senate itself.
What does this all mean?
Some senators think the Senate made a big mistake by giving up its power to handle impeachment cases. They worry that this decision could affect how future impeachment cases are handled, and that it weakens the Senate’s role in government.
