Former Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday paid tribute to late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino to mark the latter’s 13th death anniversary.
“President Cory stood as the symbol of hope and possibilities, answering the call to serve our nation in a most consequential time,” Robredo said in a statement.
“We must not forget the crucial role that she played as a woman of firsts, leading the Filipino people through the birthing pains of a democracy with grace and quiet strength,” she added.
Aquino was elected President in the aftermath of the People Power Revolution in February 1986 that ousted then President Ferdinand Marcos.
“Despite the tumultuous years that followed, President Cory helped us envision the wonders that come when we stand in solidarity,” Robredo said.
“I hope that her faith will inspire ours, amid the many challenges that we face as a nation,” Robredo added.
Senator Risa Hontiveros also praised Aquino for being an inspiration in fighting for democracy.
“Remembering former President Cory Aquino on her 13th death anniversary today. Mabuhay ang kanyang pamana. May she rest in peace,” Hontiveros said in a statement.
“May we continue to exercise people power and engage our contested democracy to make it meaningful to the everyday lives of the majority of our people,” Hontiveros, the lone opposition bet to win a Senate seat in the 2022 polls, added.
In 2010, Aquino’s son, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, was also elected president and served until 2016.–LDF, GMA News
