Remulla seeks DOJ evaluation of Alcantara affidavit, Senate committee approves temporary transfer

MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Tuesday requested permission from the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to bring former Bulacan district engineer Henry Alcantara to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for evaluation of his sworn affidavit, which details alleged multi-billion peso corruption in DPWH projects.

During the hearing, Remulla emphasized the urgency of the matter, citing the public’s demand for accountability.

“Due to the gravity of the allegations in the affidavit and it being a sworn statement, I believe this will be very helpful to the Department of Justice and the witness protection program in trying to file a case as soon as possible. This is what the people of the Philippines want,” Remulla said.

Remulla requested that Alcantara be taken to the DOJ in the morning to review the affidavit and its annexes in full, and to sign documents necessary to pursue the individuals mentioned in his sworn statement. The committee approved the request on the condition that Alcantara would be returned after lunch for further questioning by senators.

Committee Chairman Sen. Panfilo Lacson confirmed the arrangement, stating Alcantara would be back by 1:30 to 2 p.m., allowing members to prepare their questions after reviewing the signed affidavit. The committee proceeded without objection.
