Reddit Gets an Extension, But Discord Faces Challenges: The Fight for Online Child Safety Takes Center Stage
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) made headlines this Wednesday with an announcement that has significant implications for online child safety in the Philippines. In a move that reflects the urgency of protecting vulnerable youth, the CICC granted Reddit an extension to establish an office in the country. This decision came after Reddit executives engaged in a timely online meeting with the agency, where they discussed specific commitments crucial for enhancing online child safety.
In stark contrast, Discord finds itself in a more precarious position—no extension has been granted yet. The CICC is awaiting direct discussions with the platform to reach concrete agreements. While Discord did express its willingness to engage and enhance teen safety measures, the agency is firm: commitment must lead to action.
The backdrop for these urgent discussions is hauntingly serious. Just days prior, the CICC mandated both platforms to set up a presence in the Philippines within 24 hours, especially in light of a tragic school shooting that shocked the nation. The agency’s clarion call for accountability and clear communication channels underlines a growing concern about the safety of children online.
CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Renato “Aboy” Paraiso emphasized this urgency in a powerful statement. “While we welcome their commitment to work with us, we will not settle for anything less. This commitment must translate into concrete action, genuine accountability, faster response mechanisms, and stronger protections for our Filipino children online,” he asserted.
During the online meeting with Reddit, which included notable figures like Vice President of Policy Jessica Ashooh and Deputy General Counsel Leslie Liu, discussions centered on creating “green lanes.” These direct lines would allow Philippine authorities to flag potentially harmful content more swiftly, dealing with critical issues like online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, as well as nihilistic violent extremism.
Meanwhile, Discord revealed plans for its new Global Teen Experience, aimed at ensuring that teenagers are placed in age-appropriate spaces on its platform. However, some caution remains; users unable to verify their age will have to go through a facial age estimation process. Importantly, Discord reassured stakeholders that biometric data won’t be stored on its platform, but the question remains: Is that enough to protect young users?
The urgent need for these measures has never been clearer. The South Cotabato shooting marks the third school shooting incident this year, following tragedies in Tacloban and Ateneo de Zamboanga. Each heartbreaking event serves as a grim reminder of why platforms must act decisively.
