Planning a Trip? Miguel Tanfelix’s South America Route Inspires

Miguel Tanfelix’s first backpacking trip to South America was more than just a birthday celebration—it was a journey of self-discovery, courage, and pure wonder.

From Brazil’s lively streets to Peru’s mystical mountains and Argentina’s flavorful kitchens, Miguel embraced every moment with an open heart and an adventurous spirit.

A Gift to Himself

For Miguel, travel has always been his way of recharging—his personal reward for years of hard work.

Since he was 18, the Kapuso actor has been backpacking solo across the world. But this trip? It meant more.

On his 27th birthday, he had two choices: buy a new luxury watch or explore a new part of the world.
He smiled and said, “Feeling ko ang pag-travel ‘yung pinakamagandang gift na mabibigay ko sa sarili ko kaysa sa material.”

He chose memories over materials, explaining that while watches may fade, “the lessons and moments never will.”

A Change in Plans — Thanks to AI

Originally, Miguel planned to spend his birthday in Spain. But when his visa didn’t arrive in time, he turned to an unlikely travel buddy—ChatGPT.

“Nagtanong ako kay ChatGPT kung saan pwede pumunta,” he shared with a laugh. “So ‘yung idea na South America, galing sa kaniya ‘yun.”

And with that, a whole new adventure began.

Stop 1: São Paulo, Brazil

After nearly 24 hours of travel, Miguel arrived in São Paulo, the beating heart of Brazil.

He wandered through Beco do Batman, marveled at Pinacoteca de São Paulo, and savored a refreshing açaí bowl at a local café.

But the highlight came on his actual birthday, September 21, when he found himself cheering at Maracanã Stadium, surrounded by thousands of football fans.

“I didn’t even understand the game,” he laughed. “But their energy—grabe. Nakakahawa.”
He rated it a perfect 10 out of 10 — a memory he’ll never forget.

Stop 2: Peru – Finding Peace in the Mountains

Next, Miguel made his way to Peru—home of the ancient Machu Picchu.

He stayed in Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the famous ruins. From there, he hiked up to Machu Picchu instead of taking the bus.
“Mas magandang way ‘yung mag-hike,” he said. “You feel one with nature—and every step is worth it.”

He also explored the colorful markets of Cusco, surrounded by the Andean mountains, where locals sold handmade crafts and bright woven fabrics.

His favorite? “Cusco,” he said without hesitation. “Ang ganda. It feels alive.”

A spontaneous side trip to Huacachina for sandboarding turned out to be one of the best surprises of the trip. “Hindi ko plano ‘yun,” he said, “pero naging core memory ko.”

Stop 3: Argentina – A Taste of Culture

In Argentina, Miguel went on a food crawl that delighted every sense.

From ham and cheese bread to crispy empanadas, he made it his mission to find the perfect choripán—a local sandwich made of chorizo and chimichurri.

A local tipped him off: “Go south of Port Madero at sunset—that’s where locals eat choripán.”
So he went, blending in with the crowd, savoring not just the food but the feeling of belonging.

He also explored La Boca, Obelisco, and Buenos Aires’ Main Square, taking in the city’s mix of art, passion, and history.

Lessons on the Road

After three countries, countless train rides, and endless new faces, Miguel found clarity.

“Mas lalo kong na-realize na sobrang mahal ko ang alone time,” he said. “Super important ‘yun sa akin.”

For him, traveling solo isn’t about escaping—it’s about reconnecting with yourself.

And his message for anyone dreaming of their own adventure?
“Just go for it,” Miguel said with conviction.
“‘Yung pera, nababalik naman. ‘Yung time, hindi.”
