Pinoy Pride Soars as Vatican Declares Millennial Saint

VATICAN CITY — The colors of the Philippine flag waved proudly in St. Peter’s Square as young Filipinos joined thousands in witnessing history—the canonization of the Catholic Church’s first saint of the millennial generation.

Last Sunday, September 7, Pope Leo XIV presided over the solemn Mass where St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati were declared saints before an estimated crowd of 80,000 faithful.

It was a rare and moving moment. In the long history of the Church, very few young people have been elevated to sainthood. Yet these two names—Carlo and Pier Giorgio—now shine as beacons of hope for today’s generation.

Saints of the Youth

St. Carlo Acutis, a 15-year-old British-born Italian, used his gift in technology to build websites that spread the Catholic faith. Even in his short life, he showed how modern tools can be used for God’s mission.

Alongside him, St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in the 1920s from polio at just 24, was remembered for his deep compassion and tireless service to the poor.

Both are now seen as proof that holiness is not bound by age—and that even the young can live extraordinary lives of faith.

A Filipino’s Testimony

Among those deeply touched by the event was Dan Rosuelo Roldan, a young Filipino based in Italy.

He recalled the struggle of pushing through the massive crowd and enduring the scorching heat, just to be present at the canonization. But for him, it was worth every sacrifice.

“As a young person, I believe that just like St. Carlo Acutis, I can spread the Word of God and become a role model. I also aspire to be like them—helping others and inspiring those around me,” Dan said with emotion.

Holding the Philippine flag in the middle of St. Peter’s Square, Dan felt the weight of pride and responsibility.

“It was a great honor to bring our flag—not only for the Filipino people but also for all young people who aspire to be like St. Carlo and St. Pier Giorgio.”

A Call for Today’s Generation

The canonization has ignited inspiration among youth around the world. For many, it is a reminder that sainthood is not reserved for the old or the distant past. It is possible here and now, in the everyday lives of young people striving to live with faith, kindness, and courage.

As Dan reflected, true happiness does not come from material wealth or fleeting pleasures. Instead, it flows from a life rooted in service, faith, and love for others—just as the new saints have shown.
