PH Rice Group Targets 200,000 MT of US Rice by 2028!

A New Chapter in Rice Trade: The Philippines and the U.S. Join Forces

In a groundbreaking move that could change the landscape of rice trade, the Philippines is set to import up to 200,000 metric tons of rice annually from the United States starting in 2028. This exciting agreement comes under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between key rice industry groups from both nations.

The signing took place between USA Rice and the Philippine Rice Industry Stakeholders Movement (PRISM). This partnership isn’t just about numbers on a page; it carries the weight of history and a bright promise for the future. The agreement could allow the Philippines to start importing 100,000 metric tons of rice as early as 2027, ramping up to 200,000 metric tons annually in the following year.

“Rice has always held a special place in the relationship between the U.S. and the Philippines,” said Peter Bachmann, president and CEO of USA Rice. With a smile, he added, “I was genuinely happy to sign this agreement, which acknowledges our shared history while paving a path forward for our industries.”

This is more than just a business deal; it’s about relationships. For Filipino buyers, this agreement opens the door to a reliable and high-quality source of supply, allowing them to manage their rice reserves more effectively. It’s a chance for U.S. growers and millers, who have been facing tough market challenges, to reconnect with a crucial international market.

Currently, Vietnam is the primary rice supplier to the Philippines. However, this agreement may reignite the flame of U.S. rice exports to the archipelago, a connection that once thrived from 1999 to 2007.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with the U.S. rice industry,” said Rowena Del Rosario-Sadicon, co-founder of PRISM. Her enthusiasm reflects a shared vision of working together to find innovative ways our industries can benefit from this partnership.

As we look to the future, this agreement symbolizes hope—a hope for better trade, improved quality, and strengthened ties between two nations. Together, the U.S. and the Philippines are not just writing a new chapter in rice trade; they are crafting a story of collaboration and resilience that will echo through the years.
