PH Embassy Issues Alert on Fake US Dual Citizenship Crackdown

The Philippine Embassy in Washington has once again cautioned Filipinos against false information spreading on social media, claiming that the US government is cracking down on dual citizens this month.

“This is not true,” the embassy firmly stated in an advisory posted on its website Tuesday.

According to the embassy, the United States has not implemented any new policy regarding dual citizenship — despite the circulation of another viral video that stirred confusion and fear among Filipino-Americans.

“The US continues to recognize that individuals may hold citizenship in more than one country. There is no new policy requiring dual citizens to renounce another nationality, nor is there a crackdown underway,” the embassy clarified.

The advisory urged Filipinos to verify information only from official government sources, avoid sharing unverified posts, and report fake content to social media platforms to stop the spread of misinformation.

The embassy also reminded the Filipino-American community not to make life-changing legal decisions — such as renouncing their Philippine citizenship — based on misleading online content.

Under the Philippine Dual Citizenship Law (Republic Act No. 9225), natural-born Filipinos who became citizens of another country can reacquire their Philippine citizenship if they are at least 18 years old.

“Renunciation of Philippine citizenship is a serious, irreversible legal action,” the embassy stressed.

As misinformation continues to circulate online, the embassy called for calm and vigilance — reminding Filipinos to trust facts, not fear.
