PH ASEAN Hosting Delay Gets Senate Support

The Philippines is facing a difficult question—one that weighs pride against practicality.

On Monday, Senate leaders voiced their support for a bold idea: to study the possible postponement of the country’s hosting of the 2026 ASEAN Summit. At stake? More than P17 billion—a massive sum at a time when many Filipino families are already feeling the strain of rising costs.

And the reason is clear.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East is sending shockwaves across the global economy… and the Philippines is not spared.

A Call for Realism

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III didn’t hesitate.

He agreed that the government should seriously consider the proposal first raised by former Finance Secretary Gary Teves.

“The times call for such a possible move,” Sotto said.

It was a quiet but powerful acknowledgment: this may not be the time for grand hosting.

Senate President Pro Tempore Ping Lacson echoed the sentiment—with a tone of reassurance.

“I think our ASEAN neighbors would understand.”

Because the truth is… this is not just the Philippines’ struggle.

Across Southeast Asia, countries are grappling with the same economic pressures.

A Simpler Way Forward

Senator Imee Marcos offered a more grounded alternative.

Instead of spending billions, why not scale it down?

“Pwedeng simpleng meetings na lang…”

Just simple meetings. Nothing extravagant. Nothing excessive.

She pointed out that even fellow ASEAN nations are facing challenges. So perhaps this isn’t about saving face—it’s about facing reality.

And if postponement feels too uncomfortable?

Then simplify everything.

Strip it down to its core purpose—dialogue, cooperation, and support.

She even suggested using the opportunity to seek help from oil-producing neighbors like Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Because right now… energy security matters more than optics.

The Bigger Crisis at Home

While leaders debate budgets and diplomacy, the situation on the ground is becoming more urgent.

Senator Bam Aquino didn’t hold back.

He called for the declaration of a state of national emergency.

Why?

Because for many Filipino families, this is already an emergency.

“Unang-una… pwede silang maglagay ng price ceiling sa essential goods.”

A price cap on basic goods.

Immediate financial aid for transport workers.

Support for small businesses struggling to stay afloat.

These are no longer long-term plans—they are urgent lifelines.

Preparing for What’s Coming

Other senators are thinking ahead… and bracing for impact.

JV Ejercito pushed for the creation of an inter-agency task force—a team dedicated to preparing for the economic fallout.

What are the plans for austerity?
Where can the government save?
How do we protect the people?

These are the questions now being asked.

A Shield for the Future

Meanwhile, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero is looking at a deeper solution—one that could change how the country responds to global crises.

He proposed building a massive crude oil storage facility.

A national reserve.

A buffer.

A shield.

Capable of storing up to 180 days’ worth of fuel, the facility would help protect the country from sudden price spikes and supply disruptions.

“A strategic crude oil stockpile is our shield,” Escudero said.

Because every time tensions rise halfway across the world… Filipino families feel it almost immediately.

And without preparation, the impact only grows harsher.

A Defining Moment

The Philippines is set to chair ASEAN in 2026—a moment of leadership, visibility, and pride.

But today, the question is no longer just about hosting.

It’s about priorities.

Should the country spend billions on a global event…
or focus on protecting its people during uncertain times?

The answer isn’t simple.

But one thing is clear:

This is a moment that calls for difficult choices—and even greater courage.
