Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Friday called on Facebook to act on the political meme circulating where his photo was edited to show he was endorsing senatorial candidates from the opposition.
Panelo cried foul over the meme posted by parody social media page “Malacañang Events and Catering Services” on Thursday. The page edited a photo of the spokesperson during a media briefing where he presented the matrix of the alleged “Oust Duterte Plot.”
The white cartolina, where the names were printed, was edited by the page so it seems Panelo was endorsing the eight Otso Diretso senatorial candidates, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares, and labor leader Ka Leody de Guzman for “an independent Senate.” The post has received over 450 shares on Facebook as of posting.
Panelo said the meme shows that some supporters of the opposition are showing “signs of extreme desperation” as the May 13 midterm polls near. He slammed the page for resorting to fake news to mislead the voters.
“While we understand that the post is a political meme, which is the norm in this campaign season, the same however amounts to a defamatory imputation. It is a given fact that there are still netizens who believe in what they see or read on the internet, including images that have been obviously altered, edited or photoshopped. It is for this reason that I strongly denounce the malicious use of my image for black propaganda and political mudslinging,” he said in a statement on his official Facebook page.
He called on the fact-checkers of Facebook to show their impartiality.
