Palace suspends govt work, classes in northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Monday issued Memorandum Circular 98 suspending government work and classes in all levels in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur on Tuesday, September 23, due to Super Typhoon Nando’

Signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, the order also covers Abra, Apayao, Batanes, Benguet, Cagayan, and La Union.

However, agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services, were directed to continue their operations and render the necessary services to ensure continuity of essential government functions.

“Non-vital government employees of subject agencies and all other government employees may be engaged in approved alternate work arrangements subject to applicable laws and regulations,” MC 97 read.

“Further thereto, the localized cancellation or suspension of classes and/or work in government offices in other regions may be implemented by their respective Local Chief Executives, pursuant to relevant laws, rules, and regulations,” it added.

The suspension of work in private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads.
