The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has stepped in to help a Filipina working abroad, also known as an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker), after she sadly lost her baby during a flight to Incheon, South Korea.
What Happened?
The OFW was flying with her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter. They left from Clark International Airport in the Philippines and were on their way to Saipan, a small island in the Pacific Ocean. But their plane had to stop over in Incheon, South Korea first.
The airline they were flying on was Jeju Air.
During the flight, something very serious and sad happened—the OFW had a miscarriage. That means she lost the baby while still inside the plane.
Quick Help Arrived
As soon as the plane landed in Incheon, a 911 emergency team rushed to help. They brought her straight to INHA University Hospital, one of the big hospitals in the city.
Sadly, the baby was already no longer alive when they arrived at the hospital. Doctors did all they could, but they had to say that the baby had died on arrival.
The Government Steps In to Help
Right away, the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, along with the DMW, worked together to help the OFW. DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac shared that their office in Seoul (called the Migrant Workers Office) has already talked to the woman.
The good news is that she is now in stable condition, which means her body is doing better and she is no longer in danger.
The DMW promised to:
-
Pay for her hospital bills
-
Give her medical help and support
-
Talk to the police in Incheon to get a proper report (called an autopsy) to understand what exactly happened
-
Arrange to bring the baby’s remains back home to the Philippines as soon as possible
Why This Matters
This story is very sad, but it also shows how important it is for the Philippine government to take care of OFWs, especially when something goes wrong far from home.
Even when they are in another country, OFWs are never alone. The DMW and Philippine Embassy are there to help them, especially in times of emergency or pain.
