OCTA Research on Sunday said new daily COVID-19 cases in the country could fall to around 1,000 to 2,000 in three weeks, a lower estimate compared to its earlier prediction of 5,000 by late-February.

“The current trends project to a decrease to 4,000 to 5,000 cases per day by Valentine’s day and 1,000 to 2,000 by end of February,” the group said.

Octa also noted that the average number of new cases from Feb. 1 to 5 was 8,422, down from the 17,025 logged the week before. From Jan. 18 to 24, the number was 28,666, while it was 34,958 from Jan. 11 to 17.

The group also reported that the reproduction rate, or the average number of people infected by a single case, decreased to 0.55 as of Feb. 2, from 0.93 on Jan. 26.

Meanwhile, the seven-day positivity rate, or the percentage of infected people out of all tested for COVID-19, dipped from 34% to 24%.

Hospital bed occupancy nationwide also fell from 49% to 40%, based on the report.

“Nevertheless, the public is advised to continue observing minimum public health standards,” OCTA said.
