NYT Names Camiguin a Top Place to Visit in 2026

Camiguin has quietly claimed a spot on the world map—and the world is starting to notice.

The island province has been named one of the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go” in 2026, landing at No. 37 on the prestigious annual list.

For travelers who love the sea, the springs, and the slow rhythm of island life, Camiguin stood out.

The New York Times described it as a “water lover’s paradise”—a place where sandbars glow white under the sun and hot springs steam beneath lush, green hills.

“Camiguin is foremost a destination for those who love the water,”
wrote travel writer Patrick Scott.
“With treasure-chest-size neon clams, an abundance of sea turtles around white sandbar islets, hot and cold springs, and waterfalls for bathing.”

It’s the kind of place where nature doesn’t whisper—it invites you in.

The article also highlighted what’s coming next. A new boardwalk in Mambajao, set to open later this year, promises fresh views and easier access to the coast. Visitors are also drawn to Camiguin’s sunken cemetery, a haunting and beautiful reminder of the island’s past.

Beyond leisure, Camiguin has earned a reputation as a rising sports tourism destination—hosting swimming and running races, including triathlons, that bring athletes face-to-face with nature.

And travelers are already answering the call.

Earlier this year, Governor Xavier Jesus Romualdo shared that tourist arrivals jumped from 288,558 in 2024 to 397,818 in 2025—a nearly 38 percent increase in just one year.

Camiguin now stands alongside other Southeast Asian destinations on the list, including Penang in Malaysia, Bangkok, and Vietnam.

Published annually, the “52 Places to Go” list highlights destinations around the globe that offer something special—something timely.

For Camiguin, it’s a moment long in the making.

An island of fire and water.
Of quiet beauty and growing pride.

And now—
a place the world is finally being invited to discover.
