Crisis in Nepal: Updates on the Impact of Recent Floods
In a poignant reflection of nature’s fury, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in the Philippines reported on Monday that, thankfully, no Filipino nationals have been affected by the devastating flooding in Nepal that followed a landslide on Sunday.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac shared the reassuring news during an interview on *Unang Balita*. “For now, we are still coordinating with our embassy out of New Delhi, which also covers Nepal,” he explained. Given the small number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) there—estimated between 30 to 40—the DMW remains vigilant. “Most of them are in the capital, Kathmandu,” he noted, emphasizing the ongoing communication with the embassy to ensure the safety of Filipinos in the region.
Despite the catastrophic conditions, Cacdac reiterated, “So far, no one has been reported affected by this new tragedy.” This news brought a sigh of relief to families back home, many of whom clutch their phones tightly, anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones.
The landslide originated in Chumnubri village, located about 100 km (62 miles) west of Kathmandu. It blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, leading to widespread flooding downstream. Images captured from drones show the extensive damage, with houses and infrastructure swept away, illustrating the impact on the lives of local villagers.
In light of such calamity, authorities have urged residents to seek safer ground. While destruction occurred, there have been no confirmed casualties thus far, a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
For OFWs needing assistance or for concerned family members seeking information, Secretary Cacdac encouraged them to reach out via the DMW hotline at 1348. “We are here to help,” he assured, highlighting the department’s commitment to support during these challenging times.
In moments like these, where nature’s wrath can quickly alter lives, the strength and resilience of communities shine through. Let us remain hopeful and supportive, keeping those affected in our hearts as they navigate this tumultuous period.
