NAIA Terminals closed for 12 hours on Dec. 3 due to ‘Tisoy’
All terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will be closed for 12 hours on Dec. 3, Tuesday, in anticipation of the inclement weather brought about by Typhoon ‘Tisoy’ (international name: Kammuri).
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) made the announcement during a press briefing on Monday. A separate advisory was issued by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
MIAA said the airport closure from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday is part of its measures to ensure the safety of air passengers ahead of the onslaught of ‘Tisoy’.
MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal appealed to passengers to stay in their homes and to avoid going to airports. They are also urged to coordinate with their carriers for flight schedules.
“Once flight operations resume, priority will be given to scheduled flights. Recovery flights will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis,” the DOTr said in its advisory.
“For an orderly succession of flights, recovery flights must have prior approval from the MIAA authority,” it added.
The department said regular runway maintenance, which is scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 a.m. will also be suspended for three more days after resumption of flights to give way to recovery flights.
Based on latest weather update from PAGASA, typhoon ‘Tisoy’ was last seen at 90 kilometers per hour east of Juban, Sorsogon.
It is now bringing violent winds to northern Samar and is expected to make landfall over Sorsogon within the next three hours.
PAGASA said ‘Tisoy’ may bring possible storm surges over three meters high in several coastal areas in Catanduanes, Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur as well as in Batangas, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro and Occidental Mindoro.
Between Monday night and Tuesday morning, frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains are expected in parts of Bicol region, Samar, Quezon, Marinduque and Romblon as well as in Laguna and Oriental Mindoro.
Moderate to intermittent heavy rains will be felt over Metro Manila, Occidental Mindoro, rest of CALABARZON, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and the rest of Eastern Visayas.
Between Tuesday morning and evening, PAGASA said frequent to continuous heavy to intense rains will be experienced over Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Mindoro Provinces, Marinduque, and Romblon.
Occasional to frequent heavy rains will prevail over Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, and Calamian Islands; while intermittent heavy rains over Aklan, Capiz, and northern Antique.
‘Tisoy’ is seen to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Thursday afternoon.
