The Philippine National Police (PNP) considers Naga City as the number 1 city with the highest crime rate based on their mathematical computation.
In terms of crime volume, Naga ranks 16th among cities in country including the ones in Metro Manila as of July 2018.
“However, if we will translate this to the crime rate, Naga will run number one, considering the mathematical computation in getting crime rate is based on population,” Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management acting director PCSupt. Elmo Francis Sarona said.
Based on police records, Naga City has a population of 202,000 with an average monthly crime rate of 202.80.
Vice President Leni Robredo who hails from Naga, criticized PNP’s claim which she said was based on unreliable data.
“Nakakalungkot na ang PNP magbibigay ng mga statements na hindi nakabase sa totoong datos (It’s rather sad that PNP is releasing statements which are not based on the real data).”
She also hinted at a possible motive behind the statement.
“Kasi sinabi ko na ito dati at sasabihin ko uli: Kung ako ang punteriya, huwag ng idamay ang buong lungsod (I have said this before and I will say it again: If I’m the one being targeted, do not drag the whole city into it),” said the vice president. — Grace Casin
