Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso has urged the Senate to amend some laws to hold barangay officials and police officers who will be found remiss on their jobs in maintaining cleanliness and order in their areas of responsibility accountable and get penalized.
The now known as “Rock Star Mayor” also advised his fellow officials in maintaining sanitation and order in the streets.
“Gusto ba ninyo na malinis ang kalye, simpleng simple lang. Huwag kayong tatanggap. Huwag kayong tanggap nang tanggap [Do you like to have clean streets? It’s so simple: Do not take bribes. Don’t accept anything].”
Moreno said public funds will even remain untouched in the said clean-up project.
“Kaya yun po talaga ang nagtulak sa amin [That drove us] to put order in the streets of Manila. Ang maganda po nito, Mr Chair, TY po ito. Wala po itong tosgas [The beauty in this, Mr. Chair, is that it is free. We didn’t have to spend].”
Moreno’s move is in accordance with the directive of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to clean up the streets of Metro Manila within 60 days.
DILG Secretary Eduardo Eduardo Año said that even after the 60-day period, local officials have an obligation to maintain cleanliness and order in the streets of Metro Manila.
He added, “kung lahat po ng mayor ay katulad ni Mayor Isko Moreno ay baka mababawasan o wala na tayong problema sa buong Pilipinas [if all the mayors are like Mayor Isko Moreno, problems in the Philippines will lessen or even be eradicated].” (with details from Nel Maribojoc) /mbmf
