In a significant move aimed at ensuring passenger safety, Montenegro Lines has announced an immediate ban on electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) aboard its vessels. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a fire on the MV June Aster while it was en route to Coron, Palawan.
Why the Ban?
Montenegro Lines has expressed that this decision is driven by safety concerns. The company stated, “This measure is being implemented as a preventive safety precaution to minimize the risk of fire, explosion, thermal runaway, and other potential hazards associated with electric and hybrid vehicle batteries during vessel operations.”
It’s a stark reminder of how quickly things can turn dangerous, and the shipping line is taking all necessary steps to protect its passengers, crew, and cargo.
Coordinating for Safety
Earlier in the day, the Department of Energy revealed that they are actively working to establish guidelines for transporting EVs. They are in close coordination with the Maritime Industry Authority to ensure that safety standards are met.
The directive from Montenegro Lines emphasizes the role of their dedicated personnel, instructing Vessel Masters to ensure strict compliance. They must ensure that no electric or hybrid vehicle is accepted for boarding, and this policy will involve collaboration with various departments, including Operations, Terminal, and Ticketing.
Keeping Everyone Informed
To maintain safety, the shipping company is making it clear: Personnel are instructed to properly check and identify vehicles before boarding. Any attempts to bring an electric or hybrid vehicle on board must be reported immediately to the Operations and SQA Departments.
