MANILA, Philippines — The Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG) expressed full support for Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong on his appointment as special adviser and investigator for the Independent Commission on Infrastructure.
The group described the appointment as a recognition of Magalong’s track record in both law enforcement and public service.
On Saturday, the M4GG said the Baguio mayor’s “integrity, independence, and loyalty to the Filipino people” make him the right fit for the commission.
Magalong served as chief of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, where he oversaw high-profile criminal cases.
He also led the Board of Inquiry into the deaths of 44 Special Action Force commandos in the 2015 Mamasapano encounter, a role that highlighted his skills in investigation and analysis.
M4GG noted that these experiences gave him the competence required to help the commission scrutinize infrastructure projects and detect irregularities.
The group stressed that the Independent Commission on Infrastructure must be guided by transparency and impartiality, values it said Magalong has consistently demonstrated in his career.
It added that his appointment is expected to bolster public confidence in the commission’s mission of addressing corruption and inefficiency in major government projects.
“We are ready to assist and support Mayor Magalong in his role as a Special Adviser and Investigator, knowing he will be a key force in rooting out corruption that erodes public trust,” the group said.
Formed as a watchdog to oversee large-scale infrastructure programs, the Independent Commission on Infrastructure has been tasked with probing questionable deals, ensuring proper use of funds, and recommending reforms.
M4GG said the fight against corruption in public works remained urgent, as anomalies in flood control, road construction, and procurement have raised concerns nationwide.
The group underscored that the appointment of a local chief executive like Magalong reflected the need for leaders who combine investigative expertise with grassroots governance.
It said collaboration among national institutions, local governments, and independent bodies would be critical to achieving reforms that genuinely serve the Filipino people.
