President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has assured Filipinos that the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte will not harm the Philippine economy.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Marcos said he does not see any negative effects on the country’s economy because the government will continue its plans and strategies.
“I don’t think it will have an effect. As long as we keep pushing forward with our investment plans and structural changes, investors will remain interested,” Marcos explained.
What Happened?
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte. A total of 215 lawmakers supported the impeachment complaint against her. The case was then sent to the Senate, where an impeachment trial is supposed to take place.
However, the Senate did not discuss the impeachment documents on their last session day before going on recess. This means the trial will not start yet.
Why is There a Delay?
Congress is taking a break because politicians are preparing for the 2025 elections. The Senate will only resume session in June, which is when the impeachment trial is expected to begin.
What Did Duterte Say?
So far, Vice President Duterte has not made any public statements about her impeachment. However, in the past, she said she welcomes the filing of complaints against her.
For now, Filipinos will have to wait until June to see what happens next in the Senate impeachment trial.
