MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Rodante Marcoleta on Monday defended his recommendation to grant immunity to Sarah and Curlee Discaya, insisting that it is up to the courts, not senators, to weigh their sworn testimonies.
He said his move was consistent with the law and aimed at protecting their safety.
“If their lives are in danger, I will not wait for that to happen,” Marcoleta, former chairman of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, said.
He added that he had no personal interest in shielding the couple.
Marcoleta likewise questioned Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto’s statement that the Discayas’ affidavit had been manipulated, describing it as a grave accusation that required clarification.
“It is only proper to identify who is being accused and what the basis of that claim is,” he said.
The senator stressed that being a lawyer is not the sole qualification for leading investigations.
In a press conference, Marcoleta argued that there is no basis to claim that only lawyers are fit to lead inquiries.
“Being a lawyer does not guarantee skill in investigating or hearing cases,” he said.
