Malacañang has yet to give any reaction on the statement of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio that honesty should not be used as a campaign issue.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said he has to seek President Rodrigo Duterte’s position on the controversial statement which drew flak from political figures and the netizens.
Mayor Sara made the statement when asked for her opinion on the allegation that former Special Assistant to the President Bong Go is using public funds in his campaign activities as a senatorial candidate.
In reply, Mayor Sara said, “Sinasabi ko sa kanilang lahat na walang isang kandidato diyan na hindi nagsisinungaling kaya hindi dapat nagiging issue ang honesty ngayon [I’m telling them that no single candidate can claim of not lying. So, honesty should not be an issue anymore].”
She added, “Anong gagawin natin sa kanila na [What will we tell them when] they deliberately say false statements on stage against the administration of President Duterte? So lahat sila sinungaling, lahat ng tao sa mundong ito sinungaling [All of them lie. All the people in this world lie].”
Panelo, on his part, said it was the Presidential daughter’s opinion and that it will be against the law for him to give any statement that will favor or go against any candidate or party.
Panelo added that except when one personally knows a candidate, there is no other way to know if such candidate is honest or not.
“Strictly speaking, you cannot consider a candidate honest or not unless you have personally dealt with him or her,” Panelo said. – Maris Federez (with reports from Rosalie Coz)
