MALABON CITY — The City of Malabon has officially declared a State of Calamity after days of non-stop heavy rain caused by Tropical Depression Crising and the Habagat (Southwest Monsoon) left many parts of the city underwater.
The city government said this decision helps them quickly release money to help families who were affected by the disaster. Officials said the flooding has been so bad that it damaged homes and roads, interrupted important services like electricity and water, and forced hundreds of families to leave their homes for safety.
The decision to declare a State of Calamity was approved by the Malabon City Council, after receiving a recommendation from the Malabon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), led by Mr. Roderick Tongol. The action was strongly supported by Mayor Jeannie Sandoval to make sure help reaches people right away.
Other places like Manila, Quezon City, and Cavite had already made the same declaration earlier because of the same bad weather.
On Tuesday, floods and very slow traffic were seen across Metro Manila as heavy rain continued to pour.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), over 490,000 families have been affected by the constant rain and flooding, and many are still waiting for help.
Malabon officials said they will keep working with local rescue teams and social workers to provide food, clean water, clothes, and shelter to those who lost their homes or had to evacuate.
