MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake shook the province of Sorsogon in Bicol region on Sunday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tremor occurred at 4:25 p.m. some 26 kilometers (kms) southeast of the municipality of Prieto Diaz.
With a depth of 100 kms, the quake was tectonic. Tectonic earthquakes are produced by sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries, Phivolcs said.
Initial reports indicated that Instrumental Intensity was recorded over Legazpi City, Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; Palapag, Northern Samar; and Prieto Diaz, Bulusan, Sorsogon.
While damage to infrastructure was unlikely, Phivolcs said aftershocks were possible.
