LRT2 readying for opening of classes, expects 25K students to benefit from Libreng Sakay
Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) administrator Hernando Cabrera on Sunday said the LRT2 is now being prepared for the influx of around 25,000 students daily once schools reopen on August 22.
In a Super Radyo dzBB interview, Cabrera reiterated that students may avail themselves of the free train rides on LRT2 from August 22 to November 5, 2022, as per the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
He said that the 20% fare discount for students, senior citizens, and persons with disability (PWD) will resume by November 6.
Cabrera also said students need only to present their actual school ID or their original enrollment form to the passenger assistance booth to get their single journey ticket.
Those in graduate school and guardians of students are, however, not included in the program, he added.
“Magmula Lunes hanggang Sabado ‘yung ating programa. Pagdating ng Linggo, dahil wala namang pasok, o holidays, hindi na kasama, may bayad tayo,” he continued.
(The program is from Mondays to Saturdays. We will ask for fees from students on Sundays and holidays when there are no classes.)
As part of their preparations, Cabrera said they have fixed all the restrooms and other facilities in LRT2 stations, continuing the disinfection in every end station, and are deploying more train personnel.
“Of course, ‘yung paghahanda natin sa mga tren natin. Ang instruction is dapat walang tumirik na mga tren kapag dumagsa ang mga estudyante natin,” he added.
(Of course, we are preparing our trains as well. The instruction given to us was there should be no trains malfunctioning once the students go back to school.)
Aside from the LRT2, Marcos also approved giving free train rides for students on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR) until November. –KG, GMA News
