Basketball star Kai Sotto has made history as the first Filipino to join Australia’s National Basketball League.
The 18-year-old prodigy signed a multi-year deal with the Adelaide 36ers, the team announced on Wednesday. He will join the prestigious league starting from the 2021/2022 season.
“The Adelaide 36ers are pleased to announce that rising young Filipino talent [Kai Sotto] has signed a multi-year deal with the Club from NBL22,” the management shared on Twitter.
Sotto also confirmed the development in a media forum the same day.
“Very excited, it’s a different kind of competition,” Sotto said. “Para sa akin, ang focus ko lang is to develop and mag-adjust para sa team ko (For me, my only focus is to develop and adjust for my team).”
The Adelaide 36ers said Sotto inked a contract with the team for two seasons, with an option for a third. This comes following “several months of discussions” between the parties, the management added.
Sotto is expected to arrive in Adelaide in August, just in time for the NBL’s pre-season. In recent years, the league has emerged as an alternative route for elite prospects looking to make it into the NBA.
Sotto’s latest move comes after he parted ways in a mutual decision with Team Ignite in the NBA G League.
