Headed to Siargao? You may want to check in at Harana Surf Resort – “one of the best spots to hang and meet new people,” according to Jasmine Curtis Smith.

Jasmine, who stayed in Siargao for 3 weeks to shoot a movie, said that the surf resort has everything, from good surf to a resident pug named Naki.

“You can stay there with your barkada, you can surf right out the front, you can have your meals and you can have a drink at night,” she said on at the launch of Pantene’s Fight Hair Asthma campaign earlier this month.

“And they have a pug that’s just around,” Jasmine, who is a dog mom to several pugs, added.

Harana, is located in General Luna, where the legendary surf break, Cloud 9 can be found.

“I got to learn how to surf in Cloud 9 which was exhilirating and sobrang saya (really fun). It’s where some of the best surfers go to and it’s where they compete and so iba din yung experience (the experience is different) when you get to catch a wave on your own,” she said. She added that prior to surfing in Siargao, she was only used to catching waves with the help of surfer boyfriend Jeff Ortega in La Union.

Siyempre, pa-lesson-lesson kami para naman magbuild ‘yung confidence ko (of course we had lessons to build my confidence), but when I was cast in Siargao I was thrown in the deep end and I had to look like I surf every day,” she said, adding that playing a Siargao local in the film required her to be at ease in the water.

Living in Siargao for a good few weeks allowed Jasmine to get to know the island, which is fast becoming a destination for both local and international tourists.

“It’s such a quiet and friendly as well as safe place to be in,” she said, sharing that the community is very supportive of everyone who is part of it.

“The businesses, they’re all involved with the scheduling on who gets the party night on this night, on that night,” she said. “May bar for Monday, may bar for Tuesday, and sila-sila din pumupunta sa mga party na ‘yun(there’s a bar for Monday, a bar for Tuesday, and everyone goes to each other’s parties.”

Jasmine compared the island to surfing towns in La Union, north of Metro Manila, which is drawing an increasing number of Manila’s cool crowd with its vibrant food scene and nightlife.

“It’s a wider La Union, it’s a much less compact La Union,” Jasmine said. “There’s less people pa because bago palang yung direct flights dun (direct flights to Siargao are new).”

She observed that more tourists are going to the island now, and more businesses are being set up. “It’s great for their tourism and for their own economic development.”

At the time of the interview, Jasmine had just finished shooting the film, which is also called Siargao. The film, director Paul Soriano’s first foray into a romantic drama, is about a man, played by Jericho Rosales, who returns to his hometown in Siargao. There, he meets Erich Gonzales’ character, and also reconnects with his childhood friend, played by Jasmine. – Rappler.com
