Israel Strikes Hamas Leaders in Qatar, Blasts Rock Doha

DOHA, DUBAI, WASHINGTON — Tensions in the Middle East soared to new heights on Tuesday after Israel launched an airstrike in Doha, targeting Hamas political leaders. The move shocked the international community, drew swift condemnation, and put fragile peace efforts in jeopardy.

The strike, which Israel defended as “entirely justified,” came just a day after Hamas’ armed wing claimed responsibility for a deadly shooting near Jerusalem that killed six people and wounded many others. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack was meant to send a clear message: “The days are over when terror leaders can enjoy immunity of any kind.”

But the fallout was immediate. Qatar branded the strikes as “state terrorism,” accusing Israel of betraying peace efforts it had been mediating. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani warned the airstrikes endangered ongoing talks and vowed that Qatar would “take all necessary measures to respond.”

The strike reportedly killed five Hamas members, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’ exiled Gaza chief and lead negotiator. Hamas claimed Israel had tried—and failed—to assassinate its ceasefire team. One Qatari security officer was also killed, heightening the stakes.

Trump Reacts: “I’m Not Thrilled About It”

US President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval, calling the strike a unilateral move that “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.” Speaking in Washington, he said: “We want the hostages back, but we’re not thrilled about the way it went down today.”

On social media, Trump added: “Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States, does not advance Israel or America’s goals. Eliminating Hamas is worthy, but not like this.”

Despite reports, Qatar denied receiving advance warning of the strike. Officials said the first call from Washington came only after explosions were already rocking Doha.

Global Backlash and Rising Fears

The attack sparked outrage across the Middle East and beyond. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates condemned the strike, while the European Union labeled it a breach of international law. Even Pope Leo voiced deep concern, calling the situation “very serious.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres added his voice, stressing that Qatar had been playing a critical role in ceasefire talks and hostage negotiations, which now stand at risk of collapse.

The consequences may reach far beyond Qatar. Families of Israeli hostages fear the strike may further endanger their loved ones, while Israeli military leaders reportedly cautioned Netanyahu against broadening the war.

Gaza on Edge

Meanwhile, leaflets dropped over the ruins of Gaza City urged Palestinians to evacuate, signaling Israel’s next military push. The message triggered fear and confusion among civilians who have endured nearly two years of conflict that, according to local authorities, has claimed more than 64,000 lives.

Israel insists its goal is to dismantle Hamas completely. But critics warn that the cost of this war—spreading now into neighboring nations—could plunge the region into even deeper chaos.

As the dust settles in Doha, one thing is clear: Israel’s bold strike has opened a dangerous new chapter in a conflict already scarred by tragedy, loss, and uncertainty.
