Israel airstrikes hit Yemen’s capital, killing six, injuring many

Israeli airstrikes hit the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday. The attack came after Houthi forces fired missiles toward Israel.

A health official from the Houthi side said the strikes killed six people and wounded 86 others.

The Israeli military said its targets included:

  • a military compound that also had the presidential palace,

  • two power plants, and

  • a fuel storage site.

In its statement, the Israeli military said:
“The strikes were conducted in response to repeated attacks by the Houthi terrorist regime against the State of Israel and its civilians, including the launching of missiles and drones into Israel in recent days.”

The Houthis admitted that on Friday they fired a ballistic missile toward Israel. They said it was to show support for Palestinians in Gaza.

An Israeli Air Force official explained that this was the first time such a missile had been launched from Yemen. He added that the missile appeared to carry several small explosives designed to go off upon impact.

The fighting is part of a wider conflict that started after Israel’s war in Gaza against Hamas in October 2023. Since then, the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have carried out attacks in the Red Sea, targeting ships and firing missiles toward Israel. Most of these missiles have been stopped before reaching their target.

Israel has answered back with its own strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, including the key Hodeidah port.

On Sunday, senior Houthi official Abdul Qader al-Murtada said they would not stop their attacks. He said the Houthis will keep showing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

“(Israel) must know that we will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” he posted on social media.
