Empowering Families: Cherry Ann Chishti’s Journey to Enhance Autism Care
In the heart of New York’s vibrant Filipino American community, the value of family rings true. For many immigrant families, however, the joy of raising a child can sometimes be overshadowed by challenges, especially when faced with a diagnosis of autism or a developmental delay. Navigating the complexities of the U.S. special education and healthcare systems can feel overwhelming. With language barriers, limited resources, and the high costs of quality care, the journey can become even more daunting.
Enter Cherry Ann Chishti—a beacon of hope and support. With over 20 years of experience in special education, Cherry Ann has dedicated her life to breaking down barriers and providing much-needed therapy and support for families. As a Board-Certified and Licensed Behavior Analyst, she has turned her calling into a life-changing mission.
Cherry Ann, born in Molo, Iloilo, is the driving force behind Ascend ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) P.C. in New York and the visionary founder of Chishti Care International in the Philippines. Her work is deeply rooted in Filipino values such as “bayanihan,” the spirit of community, and “malasakit,” the essence of compassionate care.
A Lifeline for Families
Ascend ABA P.C. has become a sanctuary for families in New York, with three clinics spanning Queens, the Bronx, and even extending its reach to Quezon City. These centers aim to empower children and their families through Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, focusing on improving communication, social skills, and overall independence.
But Cherry Ann’s vision goes beyond just therapy. At Ascend ABA, she offers free training for Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and provides internships for aspiring behavior analysts. “Developing the next generation of professionals is as crucial as serving children today,” she believes.
Bringing Change Home
Cherry Ann’s heart doesn’t stop at New York’s borders. Recognizing the urgent need for affordable autism care in the Philippines, she founded Chishti Care International. This initiative offers personalized, center-based therapy for children, alongside the International Behavior Therapist (IBT) Training Academy. Here, educators, clinic owners, administrators, and families come together to learn practical strategies for supporting children’s development.
Through hybrid parent-training programs, families are equipped to extend therapy beyond clinical walls, seamlessly integrating support into their daily lives. “As Filipinos, we look out for one another; language or financial constraints should never hinder a child’s access to care,” Cherry Ann asserts passionately.
A Personal Journey
Cherry Ann’s roots in Iloilo run deep. The second daughter in a family of eight, her journey began in the loving embrace of her parents—her father, Rogelio Montehermoso, hailing from Miagao, and her late mother, Cristeta Orbe, from Cabatuan. Prior to embarking on her impactful career in behavioral health, Cherry Ann spent time as a public school teacher at Lagro Elementary in Quezon City, where her heart for special education blossomed.
Now married to Mohammed Chishti, a CPA and adjunct professor, Cherry Ann carries forward her commitment to community and care. Together, they share not just a home but a mission to uplift families—both in their neighborhood and across oceans.
Connecting Communities
Cherry Ann Chishti’s journey is about so much more than running clinics; it’s a heartfelt commitment to connecting professional expertise with community needs. She embodies the spirit of resilience, love, and unwavering support for Filipino families navigating the challenges of autism and developmental delays.
Through her work, Cherry Ann is not just changing lives; she’s fostering a movement of compassion and hope. In a world where barriers can seem insurmountable, her journey serves as a powerful reminder that, together, we can create a brighter future for every child.
