Dubai woke up to another tense morning.
A drone-related incident sparked a fire near Dubai International Airport on Monday, sending thick smoke into the sky and briefly disrupting one of the world’s busiest travel hubs.
For several hours, uncertainty hung in the air.
Flights were temporarily suspended… passengers waited anxiously… and authorities rushed to contain the situation.
But by midday, there was cautious relief.
Dubai Airports announced that flights to and from DXB were gradually resuming, though only to selected destinations.
“Flights to and from DXB are gradually resuming to selected destinations, following the temporary suspension implemented as a precautionary measure,” Dubai Airports said in a statement.
Fire Near the Airport
According to Dubai’s media office, the incident involved a fuel tank near the airport, which caught fire after the drone-related attack.
Emergency responders quickly moved in.
Within hours, authorities confirmed that the fire had been contained and that no injuries were reported.
Still, the sight was alarming.
Two witnesses told AFP they saw a thick plume of black smoke rising into the sky from the direction of the airport around 10:00 in the morning.
The smoke could be seen from a distance — a stark reminder that the ongoing conflict in the region is drawing dangerously close to major cities.
Passengers Evacuated
Inside the airport, tension spread quickly.
One passenger waiting for a flight told AFP that travelers were evacuated to a lower level of the terminal for several hours after the incident.
For many, it was a frightening experience.
“It has been a difficult few weeks hearing explosions regularly,” the witness said.
“But the Iranian attacks followed me in my last hours before I could fly back home.”
Travel Disruptions
Airlines were forced to adjust quickly.
Emirates said it expected to operate only a limited number of flights after 10:00 a.m. local time.
Some flights were cancelled entirely.
Earlier in the morning, the airline had advised passengers not to travel to the airport while authorities assessed the situation.
Officials also temporarily closed the main road leading to Dubai International Airport to control traffic and ensure safety.
A Region Under Tension
The latest incident comes amid escalating attacks across the Gulf region.
Just days earlier, attacks on fuel depots caused massive fires that plunged parts of Tehran into darkness, sending toxic black clouds rising into the air.
The conflict has already spread far beyond its original battlefield.
Dubai itself has seen multiple security incidents.
Last week, two falling drones injured four people near the airport, according to Dubai’s media office.
Meanwhile, neighboring Saudi Arabia reported intercepting more than 60 drones in a single night in the eastern part of the country.
Thousands of Missiles and Drones
Since the start of the Middle East war, Iran has launched more than 1,900 missiles and drones at the United Arab Emirates.
It is the highest number directed at any country during the conflict.
While the UAE’s air defense systems have successfully intercepted most of the projectiles, the repeated attacks have still disrupted travel, raised security concerns, and shaken one of the world’s busiest financial hubs.
Targets have included airports, ports, oil facilities, landmarks, and other civilian infrastructure across the Gulf.
Lives Already Lost
The conflict has already taken a toll inside the UAE.
Authorities have reported six deaths since the war began — including four civilians and two military personnel.
The soldiers died in a helicopter crash that officials said was caused by a technical malfunction.
Slowly Returning to Normal
Despite the tension, Dubai is working quickly to restore normal operations.
Flights are gradually returning.
Passengers are slowly resuming their journeys.
But the events of the morning served as another reminder…
that even in one of the world’s busiest and most modern travel hubs, the shadow of conflict can arrive without warning.
