Filipinos Opt for Local Travel Amid Rising Costs & Uncertainty

Filipinos Rethink Travel Trends in 2026: A Closer Look at Local Adventures

As we step into 2026, one thing is clear: Filipinos aren’t ready to cut back on travel. Instead, they’re choosing to redefine their journeys. With rising fuel costs, fluctuating global tensions, and a wave of uncertainty surrounding long-haul trips, many are opting for destinations closer to home.

The Shift to Nearby Destinations

Recent insights from Klook reveal that while the desire to travel remains strong, Filipinos are honing in on nearby Asian destinations and domestic trips. According to their data, a remarkable 67% of travelers are eyeing spots in Northeast Asia—think Japan, South Korea, and China—while 30% are interested in Southeast Asian adventures. In contrast, just 3% wish to explore farther-flung areas such as South Asia and Oceania. This marks a significant retreat from the allure of long-haul travels that once dominated our itineraries.

Michelle Ho, General Manager of Klook Philippines, aptly describes this evolution: “The intent for travel hasn’t wavered, but our destinations and spending habits are definitely changing.”

Europe’s Emergence Has Faded

Interestingly, Europe, which was once an exciting prospect for many Filipino travelers, has taken a backseat in light of current global events. “In December, we noticed a rise in interest for Europe,” Ho shared. “But with everything happening now, people feel it’s just too unpredictable.” It’s a poignant reminder that our dreams of far-off lands can quickly shift with changing circumstances.

Caution Doesn’t Mean Cancellation

Despite these evolving preferences, Klook reports a resilient attitude among Filipino travelers. Bookings for early 2026 trips, especially to Japan and South Korea, were made months in advance, cushioning demand from immediate shocks like rising oil prices. Yet, there’s a notable shift in booking behavior.

“Previously, travelers would confidently book six to eight months ahead. Now, there’s a more cautious, wait-and-see approach,” Ho noted. This change underscores a newfound awareness and careful planning.

Spending for Experiences, Not Just Places

What’s even more fascinating is how Filipinos are spending their travel budgets. While overall travel expenses remain steady, the focus is shifting. Instead of prioritizing flights and accommodations, many are channeling their funds into unforgettable experiences—food, activities, and shared moments with loved ones.

Klook’s data reveals that over half of travelers plan to keep their spending on airfare and lodging unchanged, even as prices continue to rise globally. Meanwhile, 42.6% are eager to increase their budget for delicious food, and 25.7% are investing in meaningful experiences like tours and workshops.

Ho explains this shift beautifully: “In the past, snagging a cheap flight was often enough to justify a trip. Today, the question is: what experiences can I truly have there?”

A New Era of Travel for Filipinos

As we embrace 2026, it’s clear that Filipino travelers are adapting with resilience. The thrill of discovering new places remains, but the journey is evolving. More than ever, we’re valuing meaningful experiences over mere destinations, and that is something to celebrate.

So as you plan your next adventure, consider this: it’s not just about where you go, but how you can create lasting memories along the way. Whether it’s a quick getaway to a neighboring island or a cultural experience in a bustling city, the beauty of travel is still alive—right in our own backyard.
