Filipino Seafarer Hurt in Iran Drone Attack is Recovering!

Title: Hope Amidst Turmoil: Filipino Seafarers Recovering After Drone Attack

In a heartbreaking yet hopeful turn of events, one of three Filipino seafarers—who faced a harrowing ordeal after their container ship was attacked by an Iranian drone—has begun to breathe on his own again. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) shared this uplifting news during a virtual press briefing on Sunday night, shedding light on the crew’s condition after the attack in the Strait of Hormuz.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac updated the public, revealing that while the three seafarers remain under intensive care, there is a glimmer of hope. “The worst-case scenario was a crew member who needed intubation, but now he has improved significantly,” Cacdac explained, relief evident in his voice. “He is now extubated and able to breathe independently.” It’s a small yet significant victory that brings a sense of calm during such a turbulent time.

Four other crew members sustained relatively minor injuries from the attack on May 5th, and they, too, are recovering well. Despite being in the ICU, all the seafarers are showing stable vital signs—a reassuring sign that they are fighting through this crisis.

In a show of support, a labor attaché and an Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) officer visited the trio in the ICU to check on their well-being, serving as a reminder that they are not alone during this difficult chapter.

This tragic incident unfolded last Tuesday when a drone targeted the CMA CGM San Antonio, putting the lives of seven Filipino crew members at risk. As we wait for updates, it’s important to remember that in the face of adversity, strength and resilience shine the brightest.

In April, amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, Iran had reassured the Philippine government that Filipino seafarers and Philippine-flagged vessels would have safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the recent attacks have sparked renewed concern.

Senator Erwin Tulfo, chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, has pledged to collaborate with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to assess the status of the agreement with Iran. It’s a crucial step, one that highlights the value of international partnerships and the importance of keeping our seafarers safe.

As we send our thoughts and prayers to the seafarers undergoing recovery, one thing is clear: hope endures even in the most challenging times.
