NEW YORK — Something amazing just happened!
Judge Eve Cho Guillergan, a proud Filipina-Korean American, won a very important election in New York City. She won the Democratic primary for Civil Court Judge in Queens, which means she’s one step closer to officially becoming a judge who helps regular people get fair treatment in court.
This is a HUGE deal — because she is now the first-ever Filipina to win this kind of election in New York!
🧑⚖️ What Does a Civil Court Judge Do?
Judge Guillergan explained that the civil court is where people go when they need help with everyday problems — like landlord issues, money disagreements, or small claims. These might not be big criminal cases, but to the people involved, they’re super important.
“People come to court hoping to be treated fairly,” she said. “That’s my job — to listen to them and make sure justice is done with kindness and respect.”
👨👩👧 Her Filipino & Korean Roots
Judge Guillergan has a very inspiring story. Her mom is Korean, and her dad is from Iloilo City in the Philippines.
“I’m so proud of where I came from,” she said. “It’s an honor to represent both my Filipino and Korean cultures in court.”
Her parents met while her dad was working in Korea, and now their daughter is making history in the United States!
💪 Fighting for Fairness in Court
Judge Guillergan believes that every person matters, no matter how small the case may seem.
“Even if a case looks simple on paper, it can mean a lot to someone’s life. Everyone deserves to be heard,” she explained.
That’s why she wants to bring more kindness and fairness to the courtroom. She doesn’t want anyone to feel left out or ignored.
🎉 A Win for the Filipino Community
This win isn’t just for her — it’s for all Filipinos and Asian Americans. She said she hopes her story will inspire young people to dream big and maybe even become lawyers or judges one day.
“Representation matters,” she told GMA News. “I hope I’m not the last. I want others to follow so we can build a more fair and diverse justice system.”
She also gave a big shout-out to Assemblymember Steven Raga, the first Filipino-American elected to New York’s State Legislature.
“Leaders like him make it easier for us. They support the community and open doors,” she said.
🗳️ How She Won the Election
In New York, people running for judge need to collect thousands of signatures to be on the ballot. After that, they run in the primary election, where voters choose their favorite.
This year’s primary was held on June 24, 2025, and many people were watching closely. Judge Guillergan won, along with Juliette-Noor Haji and Sheridan Chu. Since Queens is a place where most people vote Democrat, winning the primary usually means you’ll also win in the final election — which will happen in November 2025.
👑 A Proud Moment for All
Judge Eve Cho Guillergan’s win is more than just a personal victory — it’s a big, bright moment for every Filipino who has ever dreamed big. Her story reminds us that with hard work and heart, anything is possible.
