Explore Türkiye’s Ancient Cities: Where History Meets Legend!

A Journey Through Time: Discovering the Heart of Türkiye

Stepping into Türkiye feels like stepping back in time—a journey through history that ignites the spirit and warms the heart. Just an hour’s flight from the bustling city of Istanbul, I found myself in Izmir, a city pulsing with stories waiting to be told.

The Rich Tapestry of Izmir

My adventure began at the local Culture and Arts Factory, a former tobacco factory from the 19th century. Here, I encountered headless statues and intricate sarcophagi that spoke volumes of Türkiye’s rich past. As my companions and I savored a traditional breakfast of Asure, a sweet dish steeped in legend, the chef shared the touching story behind it. According to lore, when Noah’s Ark landed safely, his family gathered leftover food to celebrate by creating this delightful dish. It was such a simple meal, yet it connected me to a narrative that transcends time.

Izmir, often called the pearl of the Aegean, has treasures that reach far beyond its borders—tales of Saint Paul, mythology from Greek and Roman times, and gladiators. The ancient cities hold the keys to these stories, and the first stop on our journey was Hierapolis in the province of Denizli.

The Natural Wonder of Pamukkale

As we approached Pamukkale, the landscape transformed into a breathtaking spectacle. The shimmering travertines, limestone terraces formed by spring waters, blended natural beauty with ancient history. Nearby, the ruins of Hierapolis beckoned— a city founded by Eumenes II, where hot springs once healed and rejuvenated its inhabitants.

After a scenic bus ride, our guide Huseyin Demir welcomed us with enthusiasm. He whisked us up to the ancient Roman theatre, a colossal structure that once echoed with the cheers of 12,000 spectators. Sitting on those stone benches, with laughter dancing in the air, I understood why this experience was worth every mile.

We then descended to the travertines, where we let the icy thermal waters tickle our toes. But oh, the moss! Slipping and tumbling to my knees only added to the charm of the moment—a playful reminder etched into my memory.

Enchantment in Kibyra

Next, we traveled to the enchanting Kibyra Ancient City in Burdur. Arriving just before sunset, we were greeted by the golden hues illuminating the remnants of this significant Roman city—the agora, the orchestra of the odeon, and even a fountain now gushing with spring water again.

The famed Medusa mosaic, with its rich reds, greens, and greys, remained intact, a priceless reminder of the city’s storied past. Kibyra earned its nickname, “City of Gladiators,” as the ancient stadium once hosted epic battles. Walking back, the view of Gölhisar town sparkled in the fading light, forever etched in my heart.

Kaleiçi: A Delightful Fusion of Old and New

Our adventure concluded in Antalya, where Kaleiçi, the historic old town, captured my imagination. Its ancient walls hummed stories of civilizations past. That night, exhausted but exhilarated, I barely noticed Hadrian’s Gate. But come morning, the landmark stood regal, its grooves in the pavement whispering echoes of cartwheels from centuries ago.

Nestled on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, Kaleiçi’s charm unfolded like a storybook—cobblestone streets, Ottoman houses, and the infectious energy of a vibrant town. The Clock Tower, or Saat Kulesi, became our guide, leading us through winding streets to the nearby azure waters.

Antalya boasts a remarkable 233 Blue Flag-certified beaches, a testament to its commitment to environmental standards. While we didn’t swim, the sun and salty breeze filled our spirits, reminiscent of carefree summer days.

Perge and Side: Echoes of History

Visiting Perge was like stepping into a golden dream. The sun painted everything in vibrant shades as we admired the marble pillars and former Roman baths. It was here that Saint Paul is said to have journeyed, making this city significant in Christian history. As we posed for pictures inside the enclosed stadium, sweat trickled down our backs, a reminder of the relentless sun.

But nothing prepared me for the whimsical charm of Side. Here, the past and present don’t just meet—they coexist. Walking through the city center felt surreal as glass flooring revealed ancient fragments beneath. The Temple of Apollo, dedicated to the god during Roman times, stood proud against a backdrop of strobe lights and laughter from children dancing nearby.

In Side, I felt time collapse—the tales of Apollo, gladiators, and Saint Paul intermingling in the evening air. I turned to our guide, Huseyin, filled with wonder. “This is where history truly comes alive,” he said, matching my sentiment.

A Living Heritage

Türkiye’s commitment to preserving its heritage was evident; ongoing excavations in many sites revealed a dedication to keeping the past alive. By 2026, archaeological works are projected to reach a remarkable 800.

This country embodies the stories we grew up hearing—stories that live not just in pages, but in stones, sunlight, and serene thermal waters. From Noah’s Ark stirring sweet memories to Medusa’s gaze captured in mosaic, Türkiye is a land where myth and history intertwine seamlessly.

As I said my goodbyes, I carried not just souvenirs, but a heart swollen with memories and the realization that I was part of a beautiful, unending narrative. I had stepped into the pages of a living history and found joy in every moment—a truly unforgettable adventure.
