The Senate won’t rush into an impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte just yet. Senate President Chiz Escudero has rejected Minority Leader Koko Pimentel’s request to begin the trial immediately, saying it can’t happen while Congress is on break.
Escudero explained that starting the trial during recess, when the Senate is not officially in session, could create legal problems. He believes they must follow proper procedures and will first consult other senators to see if they are available and willing to proceed. However, he is clear that the trial can’t happen until Congress reconvenes.
Pimentel, on the other hand, insists that the Senate must act “forthwith,” as required by the Constitution. He has urged Escudero to call a meeting among senators to discuss the matter.
Despite this, Escudero stands firm—no impeachment trial will take place until Congress resumes on June 2, after the May election campaign season.
