The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan faction of President Rodrigo Duterte and the Nacionalista Party on Saturday endorsed House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez to be the next Speaker in the 19th Congress.

Both political parties believe that Romualdez could bring unity among various lawmakers and party-lists in the House of Representatives.

“We believe that Cong. Romualdez can bring the various political parties and blocs in the House of Representatives together to continue the legacy programs of the Duterte Administration as well as shepherd in Congress the vision of President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. for a more progressive Philippines,” said the PDP-Laban president, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.

“His outstanding performance as Majority Floor Leader of the 18th Congress shepherding vital legislation and building consensus and harmony among the diverse members of the House make him well-suited for the Speakership,” said Deputy Speaker Camille Villar, who is part of Nacionalista Party.

Meanwhile, former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also expressed her support to Romualdez to be the next House Speaker.

“I would therefore like to advise the members of the Lakas-CMD that I am throwing my support for Majority Leader Martin Romualdez to be elected as House Speaker in the next Congress. I urge all members of our party to do the same,” said Arroyo in a statement.

Arroyo, who was elected to her fourth non-consecutive term as 2nd district representative of Pampanga, previously held the speakership post from 2018 to 2019.

Romualdez, on the other hand, was reelected as Leyte 1st district representative.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Romualdez expressed elation over the numerous endorsements and vowed to push for the incoming administration’s agenda.

“I am humbled with the support and we look forward (to) working together with the partylist Congressmen and women as well as our other fellow legislators to make the 19th Congress a very, very hardworking (and) efficient Congress working for the legislative agenda of the new administration of Bongbong Marcos,” he said.

In particular, Romualdez emphasized that programs which started during the pandemic and efforts done to revive the economy from its effects will continue.

“We are actually going to continue with all of the programs that have been started in aid of the pandemic response,” he noted. “We will continue with the economic measures to help reinvigorate our economy.”

Lord Allan Velasco, representative of the lone district of Marinduque, is the incumbent House Speaker.
