Dubai Artist Turns Old Sneakers into Donated Art for Kids

A Colorful Journey of Kindness: Bryan Jay Glorioso Espiritu’s Mission

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – In a world where challenges often overshadow hope, one man’s vibrant act of kindness is painting a brighter future for less fortunate children in the Philippines. Meet Bryan Jay Glorioso Espiritu, a 43-year-old Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who has found a beautiful way to give back, combining his passion for art with the power of generosity.

As a shoe artist working at a sports shop in Abu Dhabi, Bryan has taken it upon himself to rally both Emiratis and fellow Filipinos for a noble cause. He started collecting old shoes, simply asking those around him to donate their unused pairs. But that’s not all—before these shoes embark on their journey home, Bryan adds a magical touch. Each pair is transformed with his vibrant designs, making them not just shoes, but messages of hope and encouragement for the children who will wear them.

“Naisip ko na kaya kong gamitin ang art at shoes bilang medium para makapagbigay ng encouragement at hope sa mga bata,” Bryan shares passionately. (I thought it would be nice to use art, with shoes as a medium, to give encouragement and hope to the children.)

Hailing from the Alapan district in Imus, Cavite, Bryan’s heart beats for the youth. So far, his efforts have led to the collection of 58 pairs of shoes, which he plans to gift to his alma mater, Alapan Elementary School. But his vision doesn’t stop there. With dreams that stretch beyond, he envisions sending shoes to his high school and even to the most remote regions of the Philippines.

“Sa susunod po ay kung saan po ako nag-high school, then ‘yung mga susunod po kung saan-saan, kahit sa pinakaliblib na bahagi ng Pilipinas na kayang maabot,” he says, full of hope. (The next batch will be where I went to high school, and the following ones will go anywhere else in the Philippines, even to the most remote places.)

His initiative, called “Art in Every Step,” is only about ten months old, yet it’s already leaving imprints on hearts everywhere. “Para sa akin, hindi lang po ito tungkol sa pagpipinta ng sapatos,” he explains. (For me, this is not just about painting shoes.) Each hand-painted pair tells a story—a story of resilience, encouragement, and a reminder that there are people who believe in them.

Bryan’s words echo a profound truth: “Gusto kong ipakita na kahit isang lumang pares ng sapatos na hindi na ginagamit, pwede pa itong magkaroon ng bagong purpose at maging blessing sa ibang tao.” (I want to show that even an old pair of shoes that’s no longer used can have a new purpose and be a blessing to others.)

Reflecting on his journey, Bryan reminisces about his early days back in the Philippines, where he waited tables before embarking on this adventure in the UAE back in November 2007. He later worked at the residence of one of the country’s royals. Yet, it’s as a shoe artist that he truly found his calling.

And now, with this beautiful initiative, Bryan feels a deep sense of purpose. Each pair of shoes comes with a personalized message meant to uplift the spirits of their future owners. As his project has gained traction, he has started receiving not only children’s shoes but also adult footwear. “Natutunan ko rin pong tanggapin ang mga ito para mas marami pa tayong matulungan,” he says with sincerity. (I have learned to also accept them so that I can help more people.)

Funding this beautiful project comes from Bryan’s own pocket, but he remains open to support, especially for logistical needs to reach even more children. Once all the shoes are repainted and ready, they will soon make their way back to the Philippines.

Today, Bryan stands proud, knowing he’s making a real difference, one step at a time. His colorful journey shows that sometimes, a small act of kindness can spark a world of hope—bringing light to the lives of children who need it the most.

Every pair of shoes tells a story. And through Bryan’s efforts, these stories are stepping into a brighter future.
