Have you ever been scared to buy something online because you weren’t sure if the seller was real? Or maybe you’ve heard stories of people getting tricked — like buying a phone and getting a rock instead?
Well, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has good news! They’re launching a special digital badge called the E-Commerce Philippine Trustmark to help shoppers feel safe and protected when buying things online.
✅ What is the Trustmark?
The Trustmark is like a gold star sticker that shows an online seller is verified by the government and is safe to buy from.
It’s part of a law called the Internet Transactions Act of 2023, also known as Republic Act 11967. The badge will be given to online shops that follow certain rules, like:
-
Having a valid business registration
-
Showing a real business address
-
Giving a working phone number or email where people can contact them if something goes wrong
📱 How Does It Work?
Each Trustmark will come with a QR code — like the ones you scan with your phone. When you scan it, it takes you to the official DTI website (👉 trustmark.dti.gov.ph), where you can see all the details about that seller — and check if they’re really trustworthy.
It’s like having a superhero badge that says, “🛡️ This shop is safe!”
👨⚖️ What Did the DTI Say?
Atty. Marcus Valdez II, from the DTI’s E-Commerce Bureau, said that the Trustmark was made to protect both shoppers and sellers.
“The goal is to make online shopping safer and build trust between buyers and sellers,” he explained during a public briefing.
He also said that many people get fooled by fake online sellers, and the Trustmark will help stop that.
“If there’s no contact info, no address — how do you even complain if something goes wrong?” Valdez asked. With the Trustmark, you’ll know exactly who you’re dealing with.
🛍️ For Sellers Too: It’s Voluntary But Helpful!
Right now, sellers don’t have to apply for a Trustmark — it’s voluntary. But DTI is encouraging them to join because it shows customers they’re honest and reliable.
“Even if the buyer doesn’t know you personally or can’t see you in a store, the Trustmark helps them feel confident,” Valdez added.
He also explained that this badge is not like private “preferred seller” tags you see on shopping apps. Those are made to get more sales. The Trustmark, however, is about safety, trust, and fairness.
🛠️ Free Help for When Problems Happen
But wait — there’s more!
DTI is also launching a tool called the Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) System. It’s a free service where buyers and sellers can talk and fix problems together, even if the seller is a small home business or a big company.
So if there’s a mix-up with your order, you won’t have to panic — the ODR can help both sides find a solution.
📝 How Can Sellers Apply?
If someone wants to get the Trustmark, they just need to go to the DTI website and submit a few documents:
-
Their business registration (SEC, DTI, or CDA)
-
BIR Form 2303 (that’s proof they pay taxes)
-
Their business address
If everything checks out, DTI will approve them and give them their official Trustmark badge and certificate.
🌍 It’s Not Just for the Philippines
The Trustmark isn’t only helpful for local buyers. It can also help Filipino sellers compete globally.
“Even if the buyer is in another country and doesn’t know the seller, at least they’ll know there’s a government agency backing them up,” Valdez explained.
🛑 Reminder: Think Before You Click!
In the end, Valdez gave shoppers some final advice:
“Let’s not make ‘Budol is real’ a reality. Let’s think carefully before we click ‘Buy.’”
💬 What This Means for You
Whether you’re buying slime online, selling cookies on Facebook, or running a small online store, the DTI Trustmark is here to help make online shopping safer and more trustworthy for everyone.
So next time you shop online, look for the Trustmark badge — and feel confident that you’re in safe hands!
