DSWD Disburses P7.77M Aid to 4,398 Repatriated OFWs

Support for Our Heroes: DSWD’s Aid to Overseas Filipino Workers

In a heartwarming display of solidarity, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has stepped up to assist over 4,398 repatriated and stranded Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from the Middle East. As of Monday, the agency has provided an impressive ₱7.766 million in support, a vital lifeline for many who have faced challenging circumstances overseas.

A Safe Return Home

Among those receiving aid, 3,989 OFWs were repatriated due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, while 409 found themselves stranded. In a statement, DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao reassured returning kababayans (countrymen) that the government stands ready to assist them. She emphasized:

> “We are fully equipped to help our returning OFWs in their reintegration, and this continuous assistance is in line with the order of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to ensure that our OFWs are safe.”

It’s a promise of care and commitment.

A Warm Welcome

Upon arrival at the airport, all 4,398 OFWs received support aimed at helping them process their experiences and cope with the trauma stemming from the conflict. This critical assistance helps ease their transition back into everyday life.

Additionally, 227 individuals benefited from psychosocial support provided by the DSWD’s Field Offices, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to the overall well-being of our workers. This isn’t just about financial aid; it’s about healing.

Financial Aid and Livelihood Support

The urgency of their situation called for immediate action, and 1,324 repatriated OFWs received financial assistance worth ₱6.906 million to cover daily needs and unexpected expenses. For many, this support is crucial for reclaiming a sense of normalcy.

Furthermore, the DSWD’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) has extended ₱560,000 in livelihood assistance to 28 beneficiaries, aiming to spark alternative sources of income and empower individuals to build a brighter future. One repatriated worker, in urgent need of medical attention, received ₱300,000 in medical support.

A Unified Response

These efforts form part of a broader initiative known as the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT), designed in response to the challenges posed by the Middle East crisis. Together with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the DSWD is unified in its mission to cater to our OFWs’ needs.

Assistant Secretary Dumlao reinforced the agency’s commitment:

> “The DSWD will not stop monitoring the situation of our OFWs to ensure that no one is left behind, and to ensure that our countrymen can recover.”

A Community Standing Strong

In these tough times, the resilience of OFWs shines brightly. The support from the DSWD and the heartfelt dedication of various government agencies exemplify that the Filipino spirit is unyielding and united.

As we embrace our returning heroes, let’s cherish their sacrifices and continue building a community where no one has to walk alone. With each helping hand, we take a step toward healing and hope.
