Turmoil at Sea: The CONTSHIP JET Incident
In a shocking turn of events, the Greek container ship CONTSHIP JET sank on Wednesday in the tumultuous waters of the western Black Sea. This tragic incident, reported by the Bulgarian government, adds another layer of anxiety to an already tense situation stemming from Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The CONTSHIP JET, flying the Liberian flag, was traveling from Haifa, Israel, to Constanța, Romania, when disaster struck. While navigating Bulgarian waters—specifically, its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)—the ship encountered a perilous situation. It was targeted by three sea drones, causing extensive damage. Fortunately, the crew of 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians was rescued and brought safely to the Bulgarian port of Varna, thanks to the swift actions of Contships Management.
Video footage, verified by Reuters, captured the harrowing moment. A sea drone can be seen gliding alongside the vessel, before accelerating toward its hull. Following this, an explosion erupted, leading to the ship listing dangerously to one side.
The identity of those behind the drone attacks remains uncertain, but they have amplified concerns regarding the security of commercial shipping in the region. Ambrey, a well-respected global maritime risk management firm, analyzed the footage and identified the drone as a likely variant of a Russian model. Senior analyst Tomas Alexa pointed out that the maneuvers of the drone suggest it was controlled remotely, raising fears of more targeted assaults in the waters.
This month alone, at least six ships have been attacked off Bulgaria’s coast, with reports suggesting that around two dozen sailors may have lost their lives. While no one has definitively claimed responsibility, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev noted that the attacks seem to serve Russia’s interests. In the meantime, Moscow has denied any involvement and has remained silent about the latest incident.
Andriy Ryzhenko, a former senior officer in the Ukrainian navy, weighed in on the situation, expressing doubts that the drone seen in the video resembled any Ukrainian naval model he had encountered.
Bulgaria, a proud member of the European Union and NATO, is acutely aware of the stakes involved. The nation is actively seeking support to enhance security along its Black Sea coast. Bulgarian naval commander Kiril Mihaylov revealed that authorities had received alerts about potential drone activity from a French patrol aircraft, but unfortunately, they were unable to avert this tragic attack.
In the aftermath, initial inspections conducted on Thursday found no visible signs of pollution from the CONTSHIP JET, despite its cargo of potentially hazardous materials—lithium-ion batteries, corrosive liquids, acids, and industrial components.
As the waters of the Black Sea grow increasingly perilous, one can only hope for a swift resolution to the unrest that has transformed these once peaceful seas into a theater of conflict and danger.
