DOST to lead new virology institute

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Friday that it was tasked to lead the new Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP).

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act 12290, establishing the VIP. The institute aims to fortify the country’s defenses against infectious diseases and spearhead research and development in diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for viral threats impacting humans, animals, and plants.

“The establishment of the VIP marks the country’s commitment to strengthening local capacities in preparing for and responding to public health threats such as pandemics and disease outbreaks,” said DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. “By building our capacities to face these threats, we protect the health and well-being of Filipinos, strengthen our economic resilience, and ensure sustainability.”

The VIP is mandated to study a broad range of viral diseases, including influenza, chickenpox, dengue, hepatitis, and measles, as well as animal and plant diseases such as African swine fever, avian influenza, and the tomato yellow leaf curl virus.

“Viruses are among the fastest-evolving threats to human, animal, and plant health, and we must keep pace with this reality. At present, the Philippines does not have a dedicated institution that focuses on diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccine development against viral diseases,” said DOST Undersecretary Leah Buendia.

The DOST will coordinate its endeavors with the Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, and other relevant agencies. The VIP will focus on expanding local research capabilities in its first five years and is due to release its implementing rules and regulations within 90 days. ALLEN LIMOS
